I am building a KISS bare bones 16" carbine now, this will include just standard two piece handguards. All of my other ARs have free float handguards (LaRue Tactical, etc.), so I have not installed the front handguard cap previously.
There is a slight step down on barrels that the front sight base buts up to when it is installed. My question is, is the front handguard cap held in place between the back of the front sight base and the 'step down' in the barrel, or is it just held in place by the gas tube without being wedged in between? I have a MGI barrel I ordered for this build, MGI uses a free float handguard and no barrel nut with their system. For my build I will of course need to add the barrel nut, but I also need to add the rest of the parts for a standard two piece carbine handguard. My concern is that there is no space between the installed front sight base and the step down in the barrel. If a front handguard cap would need to be installed between these two then there would be no room? Thanks for any feedback. |

No, what I think will be the problem is that there is no gap between the rear of the front sight base and the barrel step down. The rear of the front sight base sits tightly against the step down, normally I believe that there is enough gap here so that the front handguard cap will fit in between.
Can anyone confirm this? |
