I’m just a newbie trying to get some ideas for my first build...I’ve got some ideas of what I want to do but the more I research, the more questions I come up with...I’d love to get this going on a budget but I’d rather pay a little more for quality...

I guess I’ll start with the lower...

I see a lot of reference to both Anvil & Mega, but are there any other companies who make quality lowers?  I’m thinking I’d like to start with a stripped lower and build it myself...had jumped around between RRA, Bushmaster, ArmaLite, Stag, DPMS etc, and then just started adding Anvil & Mega to the mix...Just lost in the whole deal haha...

Also, who makes the best parts kits?  I see that everyone has their own so I’m just as lost on these as I am with the Lowers....also, I’ve seen a titanium firing pin...is this option worth it? I’d imagine the extra strength is a benefit, but is it that much better than the standard pin?

With regards to the trigger, I’m going to build this rifle more as a first-build/utilitarian rifle as opposed to a tack driver...is a 2-stage trigger worth the extra money or would a standard trigger suffice?

Lastly, is the AGI DVD worth it to familiarize myself with the rifle?

Thanks so much for all your help in advance, I know I’ll have plenty more questions down the road.

For a lower, my favorites are Anvil Arms, Mega or CMMG.  My current build is on a CMMG lower and the fit and finish is first rate.

Parts kit... I like RRA personally.  Also, G&R Tactical have made up their own kits from the best parts from each manufacturer.  They are a bit pricier, but worth checking out.  Also, Stag kits are good if you can find them.

Titanium firing pin... don't bother.  The normal firing pin works just fine.

Trigger.... I love the RRA 2 stage trigger, but for the uses you describe a standard trigger will do just fine.

DVD... Sorry, I haven't seen it.

Lowers are lowers.  Stay with forged not cast and you're pretty much good to go.

For your intended purpose the two stage trigger is not needed.  Nice, but not required.

Putting an AR together is pretty simply.  Roll pin punches are helpful, but not required.  If you go with a collapsible stock get the wrench or find someone who has it.  You can tighten the castle nut without it, but it is so much easier with the wrench.

I'm no AR expert, but I remember reading posts somewhere about certain types of firing pins puncturing primers.

You will be fine with the regular trigger that comes with your LPK.  I bought my AR just for range fun, and the trigger that came with my RRA LPK is great for my purposes.

As for the DVD, if you're good at downloading or finding places to download things from (torrents), you can get it for free.  I believe I have seen the one you speak of, and the instructor on it is alright.  There are some useful/interesting parts to the video (and some very long boring parts), but you can get all the information here or from other sources on the internet very easily.  Personally I would not pay for it as everything I saw on it, I had already learned from various other sources like this website.  Also, it pretty much only covers one version of the AR rifle and it looked like the m16 (can't remember what specific rifle it was, but it wasn't full auto.  It's an LEO rifle).  So, it's helpful I guess, if you have a rifle that has a similar setup/parts.  If not, the assemble/breakdown he does will only be partially applicable to what you are doing (the same goes for the majority of the video, as the biggest chunk of time is spent on this).

ETA: He also talks very technically about certain things for armorors to do, because I guess he is an LEO armoror (how ever you spell it).  It also sems like the video is also a little skewed towards armorors, providing them some brief info in certain areas.  For example, he talks breifly about something like filing/reshaping the firing pin if it gets worn out.  Something I will never do, and I barely understood this process as it wasn't the best explanation he gave for someone like me (I'm not an armoror).

Thank you all for your help so far, it's starting to clarify alot of things...what are some online sources or contacts that i can speak with to go ahead and order a Lower? I think i need to try and get my order in ASAP, considering the current climate haha...

Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming!

Also, I found an RRA LPK w/ NM Trigger for 154.73 shipped here

Sorry i don't know how to add the hyperlink
Is this a good deal?

Thanks so much!

RRA LPK's are a very good deal - anything under $170 with the NM trigger is a very good deal.  I really like my RRA triggers - they handle everything but conversion kits.

well...end of day 1 and i've got an RRA LPK with a NM trigger and a magpul enhanced trigger guard on the way, and a Stag lower on order.

Thanks again for all your feedback and suggestions!

I've never been very good at the whole patience thing when it comes to projects like this...now i'm just hoping the receiver takes a few weeks to come in so my wallet will have a chance to recouperate haha...
