I'm getting ready to purchase all the parts to my first build. I'll be getting a complete Upper hopefully by next weekend, and should be picking up my stripped lower in a day or two. My stock and stock kit will hopefully be here by next weekend as well as my RRA LPK. Now I need to turn my attention to the tools and various other items I'll need to build and maintain my AR-15. Can you please list what tools/resources/guides/etc are necessary for a first build and cleaning an AR, and which tools/resources are beneficial/recommended for my first AR and AR build? Thanks. |

Nothing is necessary, that's why they are called accessories. I have several AR tools but the ones that are most helpful at build time is a pair of Sears Robogrips (like visegrips) and a small ball ping hammer with some punches. You can see great illustrated instructions on how and what to use in the above forum. Cleaning an AR is best with some specific tools (again not "AR" tools). I love bore snakes and keep one in my pistol grips. Q tips are very helpful with the AR system. So is brake cleaner. The one thing I can't seem to live without is a dental pick I use to scrap off the carbon build up on the rear of the bolt. Other than that, you'll find things that you prefer when cleaning the AR or just stop shooting it after realizing how dirty it gets when you shoot it. |
