why are there different carbine buffer weights. I've seen 2.8, 3, 3.5 oz. and which one is the right weight for the standard carbine. does heavier buffer equal better reliablity

Most carbines should function just fine with a standard buffer. The H buffer delays the unlocking of the bolt and may lead to lower parts wear over time.

YMMV, but I'm running $25 RRA 9mm buffers in all my M4s and carbines, which is one of the heavier ones.

This slows the cycle time down and reduces felt recoil to practically nothing and still provides excellent reliability.

On another gun board (don't remember which one) I found this:

Std Carbine buffer-3.0 oz
H-  3.8  oz
H2- 4.6oz
H3- 5.4oz
9mm- 5.6 oz

I called DPMS today to ask what their Buffer weights were, for
the Double Tungsten CAR buffer (CST2).. They had no idea
Asked for weight on "Extra Heavy" (BS11T).. No idea
I didn't bother asking about weights on other models.
I need an H3 Buffer, going to just order it from another place.
