First time AR owner here; I hadn't planned on buying an AR-15 'til after college, but with the way the election may go...well, you understand. I've been looking at getting a DTI rifle kit for $475, and an Anvil Arms lower for $100 and putting together the lower parts myself, but I recently came across what looks like a good deal worth considering. I can buy a fully assembled (with stock) lower from Anvil Arms for $270, and put on an upper half from Model 1 Sales for $315; the total being only $10 more expensive. Now, I know that both Model 1 and DTI have good reputations(and I've lurked long enough to know better than to buy Vector/Vulcan/Hesse), although many people have stated a preference for DTI over Model 1. My question is; is the quality of the DTI parts sufficiently better for me to try and put together a stripped lower receiver myself, or should I save myself the hassle and spend the extra $10? |
| Welcome. Another option to confuse you some more. There is a pretty good deal on CMMG lowers on gunbroker.com You can get stripped, with lower parts, or with stock and lower parts. Delton is GTG. No personal knowledge of Model 1, but have heard good things around here. Check shipping costs. Also, check out Tonyscustomuppers.com I have some of his stuff as well and am happy with it for the money. |

I don't believe the $315 Model 1 upper comes with a bolt carrier group and charging handle, which would be ~$150 if you bought good quality stuff. I would really urge you to do this right the first time, don't splurge, but for the parts that affect reliability the most (upper receiver/bolt carrier group) get good stuff. Bravo Company and LMT come to mind. Stag if you're not as willing to spend the money. edit: Oh, and the Anvil Arms assembled lower is probably a little better than the Del-Ton parts kit, but $270 is a bit pricey for an assembled lower. |
