| Pins wont budge, been in the garage for 3hrs. I tried everything I can think of. Anyone else buzz their fsb off with a dremel? any pointers before I start? |

have the pins moved at all? Are you driving them in the correct direction (IF they are tapered pins). Check the diameter of each side and drive from the small diameter side to the large diameter side, usually left to right as you hold the gun. Heat is always your friend just don't get the metal to hot....<><...:) As a suggestion, if you have a palm nailer try that with the proper punch if a hammer does not work, it should eventually..good luck, and if you end up using a dremel stop before cutting into the barrel....<><....:) |
| Hit the bottom of the FSB with a torch. Then use a 1/4" steel punch and a 2lb sledge to break them loose. Of course, the other question is why do you want them out? There may be other options that don't require removing the FSB. If it still doesn't work, Dremel away. Stop just short of cutting all the way through and finish the split with a cold chisel. Easy and safe. |
Are these dowel pins or taper pins? Because if you're going at a taper pin from the wrong side, you're NEVER going to make progress. ![]() As mentioned above, warm it up—a torch is a good choice, but be careful to warm the pin area specifically and try to stay away from the barrel. Heating up the barrel wastes your time because the barrel will soak up the heat and not let the pins get very warm. Next, SUPPORT THAT FSB VERY, VERY WELL. My next homemade jig is going to be wood blocks for clamping FSBs; They'll have a cut out for the A-frame and barrel area, exposing the mounting lugs, which will let me clamp the thing SOLIDLY to the bench. I cannot over stress that solid support is crucial to getting those pins out. I'd use a flat punch that's smaller than the pin diameter. Use a fairly heavy hammer, and if you have one, use a dead blow hammer. It has taken me a LOT of effort to budge FSB pins, even when I goofed and had to take the thing off right after setting the pins, so I expect to have to bang on the pins for a while before they budge. But (if you're going at it from the correct side), they WILL budge. Just hang in there. |
