I just ordered my first two lowers - Double Star.  I am about to order a couple DPMS lower parts kits to go with them.  I think I'd like to finish them out one in 16" and one in 20" or 24", I haven't decided yet.  I envision the 16" as home defense/tactical and the longer barrel as varmint hunting.

I am planning on getting flat tops for both.  Until I did some research on that tonight, I was sure I wanted an A1 or A2 with the handle but I think a scope would be better.

I am planning on purchasing fully assembled upper kits.  I'll build the lowers on this set and try my hand at building uppers in future builds.

So, with that background, my questions are:

1. Does my choices in barrels and upper styles make sense?
2. What brand upper kits do you suggest?
3.  Do I understand correctly?  I need the 50-ish dollar lower kits, the lowers, and the complete uppers, and the buttstock kits.  put the assembled uppers onto the lowers with the breakdown and pivot pins, add a scope, and I've got a working rifle?
4.  I keep reading that 1 in 7 rifling is so much better than 1 in 8 and especially better than 1 in 9 yet most every rifle or barrel I see is 1 in 9.  What's up with that?  Where is the advantage in 1 in 9 that I am missing.

Thanks for the help,

Dale

What is your budget?

For the accuracy 15s, you will want free floated barrels. For the HD weapon, you will need a good rail system.

I like the 18", I thik it is the best fit between the 16" and 20".

Where do you find 18" barrels?  All I have seen go from 16" to 20".
