I feel really dumb asking this question, but I can't find the answer anywhere.

If built an SBR AR rifle what all would I have to do to make it legal?  I mean as far as the paperwork is concerned.  Would I have to get a Class 3 or could I just purchase a Stamp(like for a suppressor)?

I'm thinking about building an AR with an Orion-Arms custom engraved lower with a LMT upper coupled with a 10.5" barrel, and finish it off with a piston conversion.

thanks

under the armory section there is a forum for class 3 questions.

but in a nut shell, 2 ways to go.....(assuming a SBR is legal in your state). purchase a SBR from some and have a class 3 FFL handle the transfer to you on a form 4 (like a suppressor). Or you purchase (or use one you already have) receiver. file the Form 1 paperwork to have it registered as a SBR. both cost $200. but you have to have a legally registered SBR before you purchase and have in your possession the SBR upper.

I am trying to convert my pre-ban M4 to a SBR with a 7.5" barrel in the cheapest way possible.

Would it be possible to complete the Form 1 and just swicth the barrel on my rifle instead of having to buy a brand new upper?

Actually...I just finished up some more research and found that it is actually illegal for me to build a SBR in AL.
