I am looking to get a new vise for my work bench for building AR-15's and other gunsmithing.  What size do you all recommend.  I am not looking for something that will over take my work bench.  My workbench consists of a 4 foot piece of counter top mounted to the wall with L-brackets.

I use a 4" that I inherited from my grandfather. He used it in his gunsmithing shop for +20 years. It works just fine for me too.
Id go with a 4" Columbia if I had to buy a new one. Stay away from the Chicom crap from Harbor freight/tool king. My buddy was trying to wrench a DPMS barrel nut off with a breaker bar, when the jaws broke. Cheater bar cought him right bettween the eyes. He split his forehead (8 stitches) pretty good. T

The usual recommendation is to pick up vises until you find one that you can barely pick up and buy that one.  You can never have to big a vise.  However with your bench I would not mount a vise at all.  Too limp, you will rip out the counter top very quickly.
