| Who aside from Del-Ton has an assembled upper with a light weight 16" barrel installed? I want to make THE LIGHTEST rifle I possibly can and am looking for options. |
|
I built one using a Bushmaster Superlight barrel, a Colt no-ring BCG, Les Baer Ultimate Flat Top upper (no forward assist--about 7 oz.) and a Clark Custom Guns Carbon Fiber free float tube cut down to carbine length (4 oz.). I could probably shave off three more ounces by shaving the front sight base or using a low profile front sight base. IMO, to get much ligher, you'd have to go to a shorter barrel (SBR or 14.5" w/permanently attached muzzle device), a Carbon 15 upper, a low-mass BCG and/or an even lighter barrel profile. FWIW, mine weighs in at just a hair over 5 pounds on a Cavalry Arms Mk II lower. |

The Colt 6520 has the lightest Title I barrel. If you want to make it lighter, cut the 5.5 ounce front sight off. You should be able to get it down to one ounce flat if you cut the front pin off. Cover it with a rail. Adding an inch to a rail adds an ounce. If you don't want the rail, use a carbon fiber float tube, it is lighter. Call Steve at ADCO and order a 9MM upper with a gas tube hole cut. It will around 2.5-3 ounces lighter than a stock M4 upper. Don't lose more than an ounce or two of reciprocating mass. Use a Colt Enhanced stock for best cheek weld. Don't use iron sights. |
