Are 7.62x39 rounds compatible with a .308 barrel as long as you have the correct magazine?  I know the .308 is also 7.62mm in diameter so I am assuming you can feed 7.62x39 rounds into it but I am not sure.

Also I am looking to purchase a side-charging upper receiver from Alexander Arms.  I want to use it with a 7.62x39mm barrel.  Does anyone know whether this receiver/receivers in general are compatible with multi calibers (.223, 7.62mm, 6.5mm etc. ) or if certain parts must be replaced to accept a different caliber barrel & ammo?  Any info would be appreciated.

Bullet dia. on 7.62X39 is .311 to .312. While 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. bullet dia. is .308.
Just a FYI.

thanks for the info. I'm assuming that means 7.62x39 rounds are not compatible with a .308 barrel?

If by using both kinds of ammo in the same barrel.....No. They use different chambers.

Maybe I don't fully understand the question..
