What is the difference between AR barrel and M4 Barrel?  Will they both work on the same upper, or are the upper specific to each style of barrell.  Thanks in advace for the info, I'm new to the world of AR's and getting parts to tegether for a build.

M4 has the grenade launcher notch and a more light weight type profile under the handguards. AR barrels can be any sort of profile, heavy, bull, recon, mid, lightweight, etc.

The M4 barrel is also 14.5 inches long. Not a legal length for civilians with out the proper paper work or a permanently attached muzzle device to make the total length over 16 inches.

But most makers or company's sell a 16" M4 type Bbl for the rest of us to buy with no worries  for things like a SBR or Short Barrel Rifle witch needs a  rifle tax stamp to put it simply.

To me the 14.5" Barrel just gives up way to much in FPS & Energy past the 100-125 yard mark for them being just two inches shorter over the regular 16.+" carbine, and having to file the paper work plus having to pay for the tax stamp as well.

But to each his own on that call ?

Best wishes in whatever way you go,

yls

I'm not sure what an AR15 barrel is but if you're referring to a gov't profile M4 barrel it is what two of the other posters have described. Light under the handguards (gov't profile), M203 nade launcher notch forward of the FSB & rear of the muzzle. Mil uses these but they are avaialble for civ use with every upper I'm aware of in 16" & 14.5" (SBR) lengths. Since 14.5" in civ hands is a SBR by ATF standards the market offers the 16" which is 17"+ because SBR's are not legal for shooters in certain states to own. Some have M4 feed ramps, 1/7 or 1/9 twist rates, F stamped & standard FSB's. There are all kinds of barrel profiles & lengths to choose from. Do a bit of reading & asking more questions here & you will get it all figured out so you can make a good decision on what you want to buy.
