Hello all, I am looking to build a nice multi use rifle for my next toy.I am looking for precision out to about 200-300 yards. I generally shoot 55 grain or 62 grain bullets and have had good luck with them in my LMT Defender 2000 M-4
Heres what I am thinking
LMT lower or Spikes pictogram lower with sopmod stock.
Sabre Defense midlength upper with fluted 16" barrel ith 1/8 twist
Either the troy 10" or 12 inch free float with troy sights front and rear.
Millet DMS from my M-4

So here my questions and concerns. I have read the info in the ammo faq and it seems that the 1/8 should be ok for the wieght of bullet I intend to shoot. Is this corecct or do you guys have some advice from experiance. Thanks for the advice in advance.

1:8 is fine... a touch fast for optimum with 55s but is probably the best all around choice in twist rate.

For the price I'd recommend a Magpul UBR stock instead of the SOPMOD, particularly for a recce/precision rig.

Thanks for the advice. I thought it would be ok but I wasn't sure. The UBR is nice but just not my style. I already have the CTR on my M-4 and really like it, and I can get the Sopmod  with the lower ant a local dealer for a good price.

Any other advice please keep it coming.

I've got a SOPMOD on my Recce.  It's a great stock, especially with optics.

I'd go with the 12" rail.  It'll cover the gas block.

Great looking start  - which gas block? (Troy? iirc, the Troy block is cheap with the rail system; VLTOR?)

Which muzzle device are you going with?

Sounds like it'll be a great looking unit - if the SOPMOD is what you're wanting, go for it.  If you really want to see us soil ourselves, going with FDE color scheme on the pistol grip, stock, BUIS, and rail system would work for that, especially with a nice fluted Sabre barrel (although if that doesn't match your application, then don't)

1:8 will do - 1:7 or 1:9 would both suffice for a mix of 55 and 62gr - the only picky ones are with 75+gr rounds in 1:9 barrels, which is hit or miss (some they're great, others just won't group).  My SPR is a 1:8, no complaints, although it hasn't seen enough of a spread in rounds for me to notice a difference.

I was thinking of going with this upper listed on PKfirearms thread in the EE. Then have the Barrel duracoated black to match and maybe switch to to a 12"Troy rail. I like the 10" too
As far as FDE goes. it is always possible. Right now My m4 had FDE CTR, Miad, and Pmags, but I figure I can always swap things around if I wanted, But I really like the all black look on the Recce Builds.  Of course OD green is a possibility to . also I think for now I would do a 5C2 until I find something I like better.

Sabre Defense 16 inch Stainless Steel Fluted Midlength Upper

Features a Sabre Defence 16" stainless steel, mid-weight, mid-length gas system, 1/8 twist, 5.56 chamber, M4 feed ramps on barrel extension. A3 receiver with M4 feed ramps, Troy Industries 10" Midlength Extended quad rail and Troy Industries low profile gas block.

What a SOPMOD and a 12" rail will look like.

Well I ordered a Spike's pictogram lower from my Dealer today, its a start. So what is a Quailty LPK to use?

My vote is for a simple RRA LPK w/ 2-stage trigger.

As for rail system lengths - 9" through 13.5" would be fine - just play with LaRue's weapon builder until you find what you like.
My personal preference would be a 12 (13.5" is too long unless you're mounting a PVS-22), and the 10" seems like an afterthought, so much so that a 9 might look better

The VLTOR flash hider looks like a winner for that countour of barrel, if not the Sabre gill one.

Great start!!!

I have used Stag, RRA, and Bushmaster LPK's.  I have not had a problem with any of them.  Adco has a discount on RRA right now.
