I've got an LMT upper and I can't get these damn taper pins out. I'm using a FSB block from Brownells, a 2lb sledge and taper pin punch. I've soaked these pins for two weeks in penetrating oil because I knew they were tough. The last one of these I did with a member of this board, we ended up breaking two punches and finally took it to Scott at Tactics LLC, where he broke 2 more. Anyone have any advice on how to get these damn things out? |
| I had the same problem a month ago on a new LMT upper. I took it to a local gun shop and the owner broke two punches, but they eventually came out. One of the pins actually broke in two and couldn't be used again. My only suggestion would be to use a hammer instead of a sledge and swing it hard. He used a hammer and I couldn't believe how hard he hit it. |
Is there a special tool to use with a press? I've got a large bench vise, that I'm sure would work. I was actually thinking about some sort of block with pins that I could clamp to the FSP and put in the vise and just crank the pins out. |

use a very short rod about the same diameter as the pin. I use a small piece from the shaft of a broken 1/8" drill bit. Once its started you can use a longer punch to fully remove it. you should be able to do it with a large vise. Just keep everything very straight when you are cranking it down. |
| Start with a small starter punch and a small hammer. I ended up taking the barrel to Accuracy Speaks. He removed the last pin by laying the barrel on the bench (no block) and used one of those small hammers with one plastic head and one brass head, and swung it incredibly fast and hard. After 3 quick hits, the pin moved, and he could drive it out with a regular punch. I guess I just couldn't get it done with a BFH, |
| FSB taper pins are always fun to work on. I don't have that fsb guide block thing. What I did was support the fsb on a 2x4, 1/8" punch and a 3lb hammer to get them started. Switched to smaller punch (i think 1/16") and tapped the pins into the 2x4. My father was trying to drift the pins through the wrong side. You gotta go left-to-right for removal and right to left for installation. |

LMT doesn't use TAPER pins... so it doesn't matter what side you are hitting them from... get a larger punch (put some tape on the FSB if you are worried about scratches) and a big hammer... that should move them at least flush with the FSB and loosen them up enough to use the right size punch... otherwise you are going to bend every punch you own... i had a really stubborn colt FSB that needed to be done this way... |

Well, 5 punches and the requisite stream of swearing ind it's off. had to cut/relieve the bottom of the FSB along the pin axis to get the front one to move at all - now I gotta wait here If I didn't know any better I'd have sdaid those pins were welded in as hard as I was hitting them with no movement! DAMN! |
