A friend of mine has become interested in an M16A4 clone. I'll admit that I'm an AK guy and have little experience with ARs, but I have done a bit of research. However, I still don't have a complete list of what all we need to complete this (we'd be getting the complete upper from CMMG and a TBD lower and assembling from there). This is what I've gathered so far: Barrel: Chrome lined, 1:7" RH, 20" Birdcage flash suppressor KAC M5 RAS handguard Chambered in 5.56 Flat-top upper A2 stock and pistol grip I know that the real-deal also usually sports an ACOG, but I don't have a clue as to the model number/reticle type. Also, will any old VFG and BUIS work or are specific makes/models used? Any other info is appreciated. |

Technically, an M16A4 is simply a flat-top version of the M16A2. The military has included the Knights RAS in all of their purchases but it is not actually a part of the model specification. As for optics, it varies widely. Many units are using the Aimpoint. As regards ACOGs, the Army seems to prefer the TA11 while the Corps seems to prefer the TA31. Given the number of individual unit purchases, pretty much any full-size ACOG is being used somewhere over there and can be considered "correct". There's at least one "M16A4 clone picture thread" around here somewhere that will give more details. |
I looked in the picture thread (was the only one that came up in a search) and that's where I found the barrel twist and handguard type. Thanks for the input, though. I think he'll be glad to hear that he doesn't really have to spend over $300 on a set of handguards to get a correct clone. |
