Sorry I could not find a diffinative answer on this so I am asking here. I have built my lower and now am going to start buying parts for my upper. My question is with the whole pre-ban post-ban rules and the federal ban no longer exsists what are my limitations as far as barrel length? can I do a shorter than 16" w/o a suppressor/flash hider and still comply with the law. Also bayonet lugs are legal now right?
I think thats a good start for now

a suppressor requires a lot of paperwork... but most barrell lengths are legal I think.

Short and simple answer. The barrel has to be 16" overall length. Anyone else want to add the link to the BATF rules?

I'm too lazy to post a link. But, barrels that are NOT attached to a Registered SBR (Short Barrel Rifle) must equal AT LEAST 16" as measured from the bolt face (bolt closed) and CAN include a permanently attached muzzle device (read barrel length + permed muzzle device length = 16").

To register a lower as an SBR will require a form 1 (if you do it) or a form 4 (if you buy it that way) and a one time $200.00 tax stamp paid to the BATF&E.

Yes, bayo lugs are legal now, however, check your state laws, they may have laws against them. You can find that out by checking the IA Hometown forums.

 Hope that helps.

Oh, and Welcome to the site.

thanks guys I think that clears things up for me, I was more unsure of the length than anything, since its my first but not my last I will stay 16" and above and if I chose to go shorter then I will look further into it.
