I am contemplating my first upper build.  I want a dissipator and most of the kits which come with barreled uppers have a shaved gas block at the carbine length and a second sight post at the rifle length.  Do they do this for reliability? I want to get a real dissipator barrel, but If I am going to have cycling probs maybe it isn't worth it.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Can I build a real and dependable dissipator?

I have a Bushy Dissy with the rifle length gas system. I have never had an issue with it on semi auto. Tried full auto once, but it just does not work on FA, but this is not an issue for 99% of the people out there. CMMG also has dissy uppers with rifle length gas systems.

Alot of companies just use there standard carbine gas system barrels and do dissapators out of them with a second fake front sight for production reasons, they dont have to order a seperate second barrel design.

I would have no issues if I had my dissy as my "grab and go gun"....and sometimes it is in that slot in the safe to....

Thank you for responding.  I am def. leaning towards the dissy as my first upper build.

I just want a "real" one for some reason although the fake ones are probably 100% reliable.

Anyway enough rambling.

Thanks again,

Curtis

I've got a Colt "Dissipator." Barrel was originally a 20-inch A2 that was cut down by SAW.

It's perfect. Runs great. I've got about 1500-rounds through it since it was cut down.

I do believe the reason Bushmaster goes with the CAR length gas block under the handguard is reliability. Same reason they quit making 10.5-inch uppers. The 10.5 and rifle length Dissy may need some "tuning," much easier for BM mass production to slap something together that may not need that extra touch.

One of my favorite arfs now.

My dissy build uses a bushmaster barrel which does not have a car gas system, but a rifle length gas system. came from bushmaster this way. It was an H-bar though and rather heavy, I had it turned down under the rail system to about a mid-weight and it made a real difference in the feel of the firearm.

I Dissy'd a 20" Colt H-Bar, retaining the rifle length gas system with an enlarged gas port.  It's now a 16".  Only a few hundred rounds through it so far but it's worked great.

To my understanding a mid length gas system is considered ideal for 16-18" barrels.

check out CMMG for there dissapator barrels......unless you already have a 20" barrel that you do not mind cutting it down to length......you can have a gunsmith do it or a machine shop can do it and then recoat it yourself....if you have a gun smith do it, they should recoat it also.....CMMG has ready to go barrels....

this is from the CMMG website:

16 M10 Multi-Role Barrel

New production stripped 16" M10 barrels. Features include chrome lined chamber and bore, MP testing, 5.56mm chambering, 1/7" twist, M4 barrel extension, mil-spec parkerizing, drilled gas port, and standard 1/2x28 threads. The M10 multi-role barrel allows six different gas/FSB combinations to suit different needs. Barrels have not been drilled for taper pins. Barrels are engraved "CMMG MPC 5.56 NATO 1/7". Please specify gas port to be drilled at CAR, mid-length or rifle position.

Just checked the Bushy website, looks like they are not doing the rifle length gas systems any more.....bummer.......

I have a CMMG 16" with midlength gas system. It's one of my favorites.
