I'm starting my first AR build.  I plan to use several Yankee Hill Machine parts:  Flash Hider, Lwt Handguard, BUIS rear, etc.

Are these top quality parts at a good price, or should I be looking at other handguards, etc?

YHM makes good quality stuff. Another popular company to look at for accessories..... Midwest Industries.

Why would they be bad?  . . . .or the others better?

YHM quality is great for 80%, but not on par with DD, MI or Larue.  I have used all three with great success but, you get what you pay for in this hobby.

If $$ is tight, and you aren't going to beat on your weapon mercilessly like I do, I strongly suggest going with YHM.  Looking in the EE section for lightly used items should yield you great results.  If you can manage a little more coin, go with Midwest Industries and their products.

Go to shows and shops, handle the merchandise and see the quality for yourself, then make the decision.  Don't base it on, "my buddies cousin's friend said they talked to a Delta Operator and he said, Blah, Blah", crap that doesn't have any merit.

YHM makes great products and more importantly are nice, hardworking folks like you and me.  That is why I will not trash them or stop from buying their products.  I will just be more selective and "spread the wealth", as it were.

Good luck, have fun and safe shooting!  Mike D.

Are these top quality parts

No, they are not top quality parts, they are decentquality parts

at a good price

Yeah, the price is good for what you get

should I be looking at other handguards,

Depends on what your going to use the weapon for.  If it's a plinking gun, fun gun, kill some time on the weekend gun, don't care if any accessories fit the rails gun, then YHM is fine.

If your AR will see a lot of hard use I would spend the extra cash and go with Danile Defense or LaRue.  I go with LaRue Tactical for anything I need if they make it.  There are other good brands as well, LT just happens to be my favorite.  If you want something better than YHM without spending the LT or DD cash then look at Midwest Industries, Samson or Troy.

Just my $0.02

I have both YHM FF lightweight and Daniel Defense Omega rails. The YHM is good, BUT I would take the DD rails everyday of the week, and 2x on shooting days.

Light years difference! Go with DD!

I've used lots YHM parts from barrels to FF and I think it's top self stuff, buy w/ confidence.

There is nothing wrong with YHM; they’re products work just fine.
They are lower budget parts and they’re rails aren’t built to the same quality as a Daniel Defense lite rail or a LaRue Tactical rail system.
Their back-up iron sights aren’t built to the same exacting standards as Troy or A.R.M.S.

But YHM’s quality is decent and the cost is about ½ to 2/3 less than the high quality stuff. Good to go with for a first build, then as you progress you can always upgrade as funds allow.

I am also building my first AR I have ordered the YHM Rails, and sights.  I can say much since it is my first build but their quality seems to be ok sure I would prefer a DD or MI rail but sometimes you have a budget.  Yankee hill machine seems fine to me just my 2 cents

I've used some of their parts in builds.  Decent stuff, good price for what you get, not as good fit/finish as high end stuff.

i've got a rear flip sight inbound, but for rails, i went with the Daniel Defense Omega rail.

Im helping a friend in Sacramento to build a CA-legal AR...thinking about getting those easy takedown pins since he will have to have a fixed magazine...

I have a YHM standard FF rail on my carbine and couldn't be happier.  For 1/2 the price of what Larue, DD, etc charge I'd say it's the best bang for the buck you could possibly get.

bullet buttons FTW! (seriously I think it would be easy to make a ring or something that could trip a bullet button easily
