I don't like the brightness of an exposed gas tube under a free float handguard. Will a gas tube take cold blue, or is there anyplace to buy a subdued one.

get it hot enough it turns a yellow-ish brown color.

...at insulating the tube so that heat stays trapped inside.

On a slow-fire target rifle there's no reason not to go ahead and paint it if the shiny-ness bothers you.  On a rifle that will see more rounds and more heat it's better to leave it shiny.  Like I said earlier, teh heat will cook the sulfur in the metal and turn it a nice, matte yellow-ish brown.

AR15's and M16's have always had bright gas tubes...  it's tradition you godless heathen!

Just kidding, but not sure what to suggest either.  They DO turn yellow though.  I can attest to that!

Can't cold blue them, they are stainless steel.  Best you could probably do is beadblast it, not sure how even a high temp paint would hold up on there.

Yep, two or three three rapid mag dumps will subdue it right up.

I'm just going to wrap it black electrical tape, that should be ok, right?

200.00 worth of ammo might be worth finding a cheaper solution

You can use an oxy-acetylene torch to blacken it. Turn the oxygen down to where the flame smokes some, & run the smoke back & forth over the tube 'till it darkens. Wipe off the soot & redo 'till it's dark enough for you.
