I just finished a build. Stag lower with a RRA lower parts kit, the upper is and A1. The bolt hold open catch does not work, I.E. it does not catch the bolt on an empty mag. What are the possible causes and fixes.

out of spec lower

out of spec catch

wrong pin for catch used <too tight to allow it to move>

debris causing the catch not to move

out of spec mags

Well, I guess it is not a 'bolt hold open' then is it.
Are you sure the spring is installed correctly?

Does it work with other uppers?

First make sure the bolt catch moves freely and returns to its normal position under spring tension. If it's installed correctly, take the upper off then use whatever empty mags you have and insert them in your lower. The the front edge of the bolt catch should hit the back edge of the follower as you insert the mag.

If that works, put the upper back on. Make sure the bolt is closed and insert an empty mag. Pull back on the charging handle and see if the bolt locks back.

If those suggestions work then you're rifle is short stroking. The bolt carrier is moving back far enough to load a new round but not enough to catch the bolt.

I used a different upper wit the lower and it had the same problem. I think that the spring for the bolt catch is damaged. Will replace a shortly and report the results.

I fixed it.

The spring was out of spec. A new BHO spring resolved my issues.
