Is the buffer really necessary for proper function of the bolt catch?  I have a RRA lower and there was no way the spring and buffer were going to fit the hole, and have the release line up for pin insertion.

If you don't install them then it isn't going to be very reliable. It should still lock back on an empty mag but you run the risk of it locking when you are shooting because that spring keeps it down.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I'll have to drill the hole deeper in order to get the buffer and spring to fit.  I had a similar problem with the safety detent being too large to fit in the hole.  Is it possible that the RRA lower is out of spec?

It could be the parts kit too.  Are you sure you are putting the right piece in the right area?

Affirm.  I printed out the picture of the lower parts kit from AR15.com and matched the parts to the pic.  It's my first DIY lower install and it's a little frustrating to have parts not fit.  And yes, my pivit detent pin did go flying across the room, just like the experts said it would!

I started ordering the parts for my first build about 2 months ago, my roommate went to saxet yesterday and bought all the parts for his and had me put it together for him.

Anyways thats off subject. Did you get RRA parts kit? The one I put together was nowhere near how hard everyone made it to be...Dont get me wrong, all the info from here  helped greatly. I would buy another RRA LPK and see if you have the same issue before you start drilling on the LR. Yesterday my roomie got a stripped lower, 2 stage trigger and parts kit. It went together perfectly in like 20 mins. I would recheck the parts kit and get another one from RRA...plus it dosnt hurt to have a spare parts kit left over from your first build.

Edit: I would have RRA replace the lower before drilling on it, if it is indeed out of spec.

Remember, always modify the cheaper part when possible.  I would modify the detent before I modified the lower.

That's for the information and advice- it's greatly appreciated.  I'm going to go ahead and order the parts I need to replace from the lower parts kit.

Um, how about trimming the spring?  On the two DPMS LPKs I used on Stag lowers, the detent pin springs were too long.  Trimmed them coil by coil until they fit.
