I am building my first AR and want to do it right the first time. Is there any advantage to using stainless steel over a chrome lined barrel??

Thanks

None that I can think of that have been found before.  A good quality chrome lined barrel made by a known maker will outlast you.

I know when I built mine, it came down to this

Chrome lined are inherently less accurate, but with today's technology, some could consider this almost negligible.  However, the chrome lining is almost impervious to rust, and extends barrel life.  Bushmaster claims (or claimed at one time) it doubles the round count... as always YMMV, but it's widely accepted that it will increase barrel life significantly.

Stainless is very machinable by nature, making it quite possibly one of the most "accurate" materials to make a barrel from.  At the same token, it's very resistant to rust, but not AS resistant as chrome lining, and the barrel life is significantly shorter.

There's the long and short.

The chrome lining is not easily distributed evenly. Hence a chrome lined barrel may be less accurate.

+1

that about sums it up; for me, SS for precision orienated uppers; CL for everything else

Don't believe it when people say a chrome lined barrel is not accurate. If you handload, you can find a bullet/powder combo that will perform very well.

I went with both and got a Denny's Noveske SS chrome lined barrel. I love it.
