Hi,
I'm new to AR-15 world and interested to build it but I notice there is "Pre-Ban" and "Post-Ban"
Can someone help me what that mean? Is that mean we can not have "Pre-Ban" or something?
Also, if someone can give me suggestion on what type of AR-15 I should build for the first time will be great !!!

Thanks in advance !

Pre-ban is considered to be any rifle built before Sept. 13, 1994. They will most likely have a flash hider, bayonet lug, & depending on the model of the gun (carbine or rifle) a collapsible stock. You will most likely pay more for a pre-ban gun, cause there are some states that still have their own Assault Weapons Ban still in place.

As far as what type of AR to build, that all depends on what you want & how you want to use it. Since I see you are planning to build, I'll answer a question that gets asked a lot here. Just about any forged lower is good to build off of, just depends on what logo you like on the side. I would stay away from a cast lower though. I personally do not have any experience w/a cast lower, but have heard enough to know that I don't want one.

Here is a very good tutorial on building a AR15. I used it when I built my first few rifles, but with a few builds under my belt now I can do it w/o it.

Good luck.

Thanks for your respond.
Are you saying if I just start building now, I dont have to worry with legal issue between Pre or Post Ban?
If I buy part from online store, do I still have to send it and deal with my local licensed gunsmith who run the background check again or can be ship directly to my address?

Thanks again

Virginia does not have a state assault weapons ban that I am aware of.  As long as your barrel is at least 16 inches long and your gun stays semi-auto, there will be no legal issues.

Every part of an AR can be sent to your house with the exception of the lower receiver.  Tha tmust be transferred to you at a licensed dealer.

Depending on the laws in your state, you would not have to worry about it. If you are not sure of the laws in your state I would ask in the VA Hometown forum.

The only part you would have to go through a FFL (local licensed gunsmith) would be the lower receiver. More than likely there would be a transfer fee collected by him, after doing the background check. Every other part can be shipped directly to your residence.

I also notice there are 2 type of lower receiver's butstock, PISTOL (with tube only attached to the lower) and COMPLETE (buttstock attached).
Is this something I need to worry about the legality in VA?

Note: I got upper complete with 16" bullbarrel w/o gas block and about to order lower rcvr.

Thanks again !

I'm new here too and I have a related question.  I have a Colt Government A2 pre-ban.  It looks like the front pin is different (possibly larger) than current build uppers.  Do the current build uppers fit the pre-ban Colt lowers?
