I am in the process of building an XM177 and am having 2nd thoughts on a purchase I just made.

I went with a 16inch M4 barrel with the slip over flash hider to make it look short, but I am having 2nd thoughts....

The M4 barrel has a spot for the M203 to attach to it, which is not totally correct for an XM of any kind as far as I know...so I am considering 2 options:

1: Getting an  heavy barrel which is thick all the way down + the slip over flash hider, giving the illusion that it is a shorty barrel (with no grenade chunker milled section)

2: gettin and 11.5 inch barrel and a 5.5 inch screw on flash hider and having it pinned or soldered*...

*This is actually my first thought, as I would LOVE to go this route, but am unsure of the pinning and soldering.  Can I do it personally?  I have a torch and can probably locate some silver solder (I read that silver is what needed to be used somewhere).  can I pin it? What does that involve....and if I can't (I dont have a shop of any kind...basic tools is all) is it expensive to let someone else do it?

Kind regards,

Charlie

Sell the M4 barrel and go either with the 14.5 + 5.5 route or the 16" + 5.5" slipover to get the shorter look.  Ballistically the 16" would provide you with additional velocity and you would not have to permanently attach the hider.  Here's one I just finished with the slipover approach on a full 16" barrel.

While I'd personally stick with the 16" for the velocity, and probably better accuracy in my hands, Model 1 Sales will sell you an 11.5" barrel + 5.5" permanent FH XM177 Style barrel for $200. There may be others.

I would do the 11.5 with perm attached 5.5 FH. I had a slip over type and came to hate the way it looked. Yeah youll get more velocity with a 16 but 11.5 is good enough. Besides what are you going to do with your gun that velocity comes into play.

Because you are going to shoot alot or burn the barrel out. I doubt you have to worry about barrel burn out if its chrome lined, unless its FA. And if its FA dont get a fake shorty FH that will kind of kill the whole concept.

I had an 11.5 with a perm attach, and got rid of it.  I just came to dislike it, nothing really I can point to, but I just figured why not go with the 16 and get the slip over one.

I now have a slip over one, and am waiting to find a 16 inch HBAR for a good price to use it on.

Cheers guys.

Am still debating on it currently.  I think I may go ahead and just get the 16 inch barrel and not have to worry about the pinning AND WELDING (as I was just told by a vendor in my area) or the 250$ tax to make it a real shorty.

Your input was greatly appreciated.
