I'm almost done building my first lower... all I need is the stock.  The local gun shop has a 6-pos CAR stock by Tapco.  It looks like all the other basic CAR stocks for sale by RRA, DPMS, etc.  I thought I read somewhere that Tapco is the actual manufacturer for most of the basic collapsible stocks which are sold under the other brand names.  Anyone know if this is true?

I googled some images of RRA and DPMS and looked on Tapco's site, they do look a lot alike.

I might make a suggestion though; those all have commercial tubes. I would recommend going with a Stag Arms/CMT style stock that uses a Mil-Spec receiver extension. I picked up a Stag Arms set from DSG Arms for around $80 or less. They don't seem to sell all of them together now, but you can still get the seperate parts for that price. They have an Armalite extension for $29, a Stag/CMT stock for $40 and about $9 for the receiver extention plate and nut. You would also need a spring and buffer, I almost forgot about that. Looks like the price would be a little higher than I thought when buying it seperately.

Of course you can always use this opportunity to upgrade some parts. I love the Daniel Defense extension plate with sling mount on the side. Also the Magpul CTR stock for Mil-spec extensions. I hope to pick one of those up one day for one of mine. Vltor also has a nice stock with the Modstock.

Just a few thoughts.

ETA: I forgot to add the cliche: check the EE for good deals.

ETA: G and R Tactical has a good price on a Mil-Spec buttstock with everything you need.

If it looks good, feels tight, and seems to be made of good quality, then buy it. But no, TAPCO does not make all the stocks out there. I have an older 4pos TAPCO stock from about 6 years ago on my sons AR, it's still holding up good and is really quite well made.

not to hijack your thread but what are the dimensions on Mil-Spec buffer tubes as compared to non Mil-Spec tubes?  I'm looking to put a MagPul CTR stock on and am wondering if I need to replace the tube.  The tube on my rifle right now is 1 1/8" diameter if that helps.

I picked up a CAA 6 position stock at a gun show today for $35 less than they go for regularly.  It's a nice looking stock and seems to be well built.  I like it because it has a rubber butt pad.  They come in commercial and mil spec versions.

Tapco is an overgrown surplus store.  CavArms makes stocks and handguards for RRA, Bushmaster and others so that's probably who you're thinking of.

You might be right about Cav Arms.... I checked the EE listings and emailed TheTic00 about the stocks he's selling for $53.  All the feedback was very positive so I decided to buy a 6 pos M4 stock from him.  It should be here next week.
