I am planning a SPR build I am starting with a 20" Krieger SS 1-7.7 twist barrel with a rifle length gas system and low profile gas block and I am leaning towards a YHM 9636 light weight free float railed hand guard that is 12.5" long.
Now the part I am confused about is will this hand guard cover the gas block or would it cover only if I went with a mid length gas system?

Thanks for any help.

That particular YHM (9636) rail will have an exposed gas block if you use the rifle length gas porting.  If you want to have the gas block concealed under this rail then the mid-length is your only option.

Ok thanks, is there a longer free float rail system that would cover it, I have looked around but have not found any longer than about 12"

Rifle length gas blocks are difficult to conceal with a handguard.

Troy makes a 13.5" rail that comes very close.   I would get a second opinion, but I believe the combination of Troy's 13.5" rail and their shorty gas block will result in a gas block that sits flush with the end of the rail.  The gas block won't be concealed, but will be flush at the end of the rail.

This rail

and

This gas block

EDIT:  I actually found a picture in my stash of old "borrowed" AR-15 pics.  It isn't flush, but it is very close
