List... I already have a RRA 16" carbine and was thinking for the next build to try a mid-length. I like using completed uppers...just because I don't have all the tools to build my own. That said I would like to find a 16" or 18" finished flat-top upper with mid-length gas, the most lightweight barrel possible, and the option for BUIS. After much searching it seems that only a few vendors offer such items. So far I have found: CMMG 16” M10M Upper $525 CMMG 18" SPR Upper w/Mid Length Gas $525 CMMG M18M Rifle Length SPR Upper $575 -or- RRA Elite CAR A4 $645 -but- BravoCompany is out of stock on their BCM 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group I did find an Armalite offering, however,: Armalite M15A4CB Mid-Length Upper Receiver at http://dsgarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=631 for $490 So... Are these basically my upper options, besides custom builds? If I went the Armalite way...could I easily build it up on any lower I choose? I have shot an older complete Armalite rifle...but never built anything using their components... Any advice would be much appreciated. |

If you want a lightweight midlength barrel, right now CMMG or custom are your only options. Armalite is a pretty good midweight profile as is Denny's Operator barrel. Decide what ammo compatibility you want first as this will dictate your selection of barrel twist rate.
LMT doesn't make midlengths. |
I agree. It is easy, the tools are cheap, and it is much more fun when you can start putting upper receiver, barrel, handguard, etc together all by yerself. I built up an AR starting with a 20" WOA barrel i picked up. Way fun and yes, you'll eschew (look it up) the carbine once you shoot something in the 18-20 range. |
![]() Carbine vs midlength is not the length of the barrel, it's the gas system length. |
