I am thinking about swapping my bolt carriers with with AUTO carriers. My question is do I have to change to an H-buffer? All 3 that I will be switching out are M4 type rifles. Another question is how good are the CMT carriers/bolts and does anyone have feedback on the Bravo Company BCM bolt carrier group? They are both the same price so I was just wondering which one to get. Thanks

Does your current system run ok as is? I would run a H buffer with an auto carrier to help slow down the extra mass of the heavier carrier. BCM bcg's are nice & I would buy one over the CMT offering at the same price. CMT's aren't bad, but BCM offers a little more vs. the CMT & you get a BCM extractor upgrade as standard with them. |

Well. let's see. Back in 1977 I had a Colt SP1 carbine converted to an XM177E2 clone, and made select fire (you could do that back then). This was years before the advent of the H and H2 buffers. Have run about 7-8000 rounds thru the thing since then; full and semi about half and half. Piece works just fine w/the stock buffer. In fact, when I tried an H buffer in it,I got occasional malfunctions in full auto; probably because the barrel is so short the gas pressure drops more quickly than longer barrelled pieces. So I put the H bufffer into the M4gery w/a 14.5 inch barrel. Works just fine So if you want to use a heavier buffer, feel free---but you definately don't need one. Remember, going to the M16 bolt carrier is already giving you some extra weight in the opperating mass of the action |
The guns run fine as they are now. I just wanted to upgrade to the auto carrier because I have read that it will make the gun more reliable. I really don't know the makes of the carriers in my rifles, so I guess I am after a little peace of mind as well. My other reason is to add to my collection of AR parts. That's good to hear that the BCM are good carriers since I will be upgrading 3 of my AR's. BTW these are semi-auto guns only, no fun switch. |

I use auto carriers in all of mine except one target rifle. I have never owned an H buffer, and all of mine work fine with standard carbine buffers (or std rifle buffers for the rifle stocked ones). No issues with running them with auto carriers and normal/standard buffers at all in semi-auto. I've never tried burst or full-auto (no papers or parts). |
