I wasn't aware that NY made exception's for LEO to build SBR's as an individual. I am sure your department could register/build (or just buy) an SBR and issue it you for your offical duties, but I do not see how being an LEO would allow you to do this. I know of no other state that allows this exemption. |
That makes more sense. Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a factory SBR? Since it is for the department there would be no transfer tax. It would transfer on a tax free form 5 www.atf.gov/forms/pdfs/f53205.pdf |
It also must be owned by the department -- and if you leave, they get to keep it. ![]() The form you want is a Form 1 (full name is Form 5320.1). Your department will need to submit it in duplicate; since it is an LE-owned-and-registered firearm, there is no need for fingerprints, photos or certificate of citizenship, and no $200 making tax is due. |

Yes, unless the law changes when I retire (12yrs from now) I will most likely have to part w/ her. By then Hillary and Bloomberg will feel like a BAD BAD BAD......dream. Or if I move I can transfer it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I realize it dosent make a lot of sense to some on the board to build it if I might have to leave it behind.....kinda like why did the guy climb the mt. Because it's there. My only answer is -- Because I can. Always kinda wanted 2. Funny thing is I really dont even like the 5.56 outa the short tube. Please dont flame me here. Just a personal note. I really want to make the build and shoot the crap outa it. Not going to using for patrol purposes. |
You are correct. 5.56 is not a great cartridge out of a short barrel. But you can use 9mm/40/45 or even (gulp) .30 carbine, as they all develop enough velocity out of a short barrel to be effective within their ballistic range. |
