I asked this question about 5 months ago and didn't get a reply, so I figured I'd ask again. How is the handguard end cap held to the FSB? The reason I ask is I want to put a Troy 10" rail system on my bushmaster. I figure if I can free up the endcap with out removing the gas block I can move it to where the M4 profile barrel tapers and use a dremel or side cutters to get it off. Thanks for the help. Hopefully

is the rail a free float, and do you have the fsb off at this point?

The situation is that The muzzle break is pinned and welded. I want to try to remove the handguard end cap with out dissasembling the FSB if possible. The rifle is a Bushmaster Optics ready carbine it has the cut down gasblock.
Edit: I'm hoping that if the endcap is pressed fit to the gasblock I will be able to slide it back on the barrel to where the barrel O.D. tapers so I can cut it inhalf with a cut off wheel(very carefully of course)

i have never cut handguard caps off before

the red lines are were i would try to make the cuts, and then when you are done wiggle whats left of the cap off  the barrel with pliers. thats my best idea right now without having to take the fsb off

Cool, thanks for the ideas. So is the cap pressed to the fsb?

no i dont beleive so, it may be tight from the phosphate, or the fsb may be tight up against the cap and the barrel. the fsb is a bitch to get off so cutting the cap as it sits like i said is my best idea at 2:00 in the morning, mabe somebody with more knowledge will be along shortly with a better one. but good luck non the less

Tony, I recently did what you are asking about. I have a CMMG barrel with a perm-attached Phantom and standard FSB. They sent the barrel to me with a standard handguard end cap installed. I wanted to install my MI FF handguards, which use a proprietary MI end cap.

The CMMG barrel had a "groove" directly behind the FSB where the end cap rested. There was no way to remove the end cap without cutting it. I used small small tin snips and made some cuts in the end cap similar to what the above diagram shows, and just pulled out the pieces.

Tip: Make sure you wrap some tape around the barrel, because the cut end cap pieces will be sharp and will definitely scratch the finish when you pull them out from behind the FSB!
