Hi Gents - I've been lurking around in the board for a couple of weeks now, reading up on things and am considering building a mid-entry level ar15 (if there is such a thing). Now, I'm going to come right out and say I've never owned, or shot one of these puppies before, so I'm probably gonna ask some pretty dumb questions, please bear with me. All my shooting experience is with my remington sportsman 78 30-06 (bolt action)which I bought back in high school for the low low price of $345 with the scope and sling! hrough, Bushmaster Bushmaster V Match "Flat-Top" Upper Receiver Assembly w/ integral Picatinny Rail $182.95 Bushmaster Bushmaster XM15-E2S Lower Receiver Assembly with Pistol Grip $275.00 Rock River Arms Tactical CAR Buttstock Kit, Black, Six Postion collapsible $75.00 Bushmaster Standard Charging Hangle $26.50 Rock River Arms Complete Bolt Carrier Group $130.00 Bushmaster BUSHMASTER 14.5" M4 type barrel assy $235.00 Rock River Arms RRA Stand Alone Rear sight Assy $110.00 On the other hand, I can get a "kit" from MA parts for $470-$570 (minus the stripped lower). Am I missing something? I've got a ton more questions, but I'll keep it simple for starters. thanks for the assistance!! Joe |

You are comparing Cadillacs to Buicks. Don't get me wrong M&A parts are nice (my kit started there) but Bushmaster & RRA parts will be more expensive and overall better. Just depends on what you want to spend and what you want to build. And it is always more expensive overall to piece together parts than to buy a kit. But you won't get exactly the parts you want in a kit! |

If it's your very first AR, I'd just buy one. It's a lot easier to put one together after you spend some time shooting / cleaning one and have the chance to see how everything fits together. If you don't already have the necessary tools (receiver blocks, barrel wrench, roll pin punches, etc), you won't be "saving" any money on that first build. My second suggestion would be to pay for quality, not the name. From the prices you have listed, you could easily save $200 by purchasing a CMT/STAG upper/lower receiver instead of the Bushmaster parts. I bought a Bushmaster lower for an SBR project, thinking that if I was going to register a receiver, I wanted it to be from one of the major players. I ended up building the gun on a CMT/STAG lower because the tolerances were off on the Bushmaster and my mags wouldn't drop free. For what it's worth. |
