I want to start building my first AR. I want to do it from scratch so to speak. What does it entail? What will I need parts wise? How much should I be looking to spend? I need some edumacation!

Welcome. But be prepared if you do this to do way more than one. On to business:

You can get away with the minimalist, but I found it helpful to have the following:
Roll pin punches (makes getting the roll pins in and out a snap. The trigger guard can be a pain without it).
Castle nut wrench (if you do a collapsible stock)
Multi wrench (barrel wrench type thing)
Vise
At least one type of upper receiver clamp (I have a clamshell style but the DPMS claw style is cool too)
Torque wrench is nice
When you order the Lower parts kit, order the spare parts kit, spare spring kit, basically plenty of spare parts
Vice grips and electrical tape is handy
Moly grease (wheel bearing grease or similar - no graphite I think)

That should get you going.
