I have a used carbine with a 16" freefloat varmint barrel and a RR lower, and I want to replace the upper with a M4-style step barrel.  I talked to a custom builder friend who suggested an LMT upper.  I would love one, but I am pretty restricted on my budget for an upper.  I asked him about a J&T upper, and he was pretty negative on that.  I don't know if he was being snobby, or certain uppers are just cheaply made.  If I bought an LMT, I would basically have to give up shooting for awhile to recoup the cost.
Can anyone recommend an acceptable step-barrel upper without breaking the bank?

Thanks!

both are great uppers and will work fine for most of us...h/w, the LMT, i would hold in higher regard (its got more "spec" parts, made in house, more precise manf., more quality i guess is what i'm trying to say, etc)

the J&T uppers use more commercial oriented parts (wilson bbls, not sure on the BCG, but i think its DPMS, etc)

so, i guess, if you want the more correct mil-spec stuff (so to speak), CMT/Stag and LMT are your best bets for the price

if you just want something that works, is made quite well, and is priced good, RRA, the delton and JT stuff are worth it
