I am going to build a couple AR's in the comming month, these will be my first ground up builds from parts. I've owned several AR's, am comfortable working on them, and have also built nearly a dozen AKM rifles but to get what I really want out of an AR I would prefer to build it myself. I could use some advice on good parts sources. I was thinking of getting my lower receivers from CMMG (unless some of you guys can sway me otherwise) and getting most of the other parts in kit form from Model 1 Sales, Del-Ton, RRA or elsewhere. The first build will be an M4 type, the second a mid-length custom or classic A2 clone.
I would like to put a 14.5" HEAVY SOCOM non-chromed barrel on the first build (w/ perm phantom or vortex from the factory or weld it myself, either way), a flat-top upper, and also have a nice 2-stage trigger. Other than that the other additions will be "bolt on" and will can be added regardless of who I get the parts from (these include a free float rail, MIAD grip & optic).
So is CMMG a good place to start with a receiver? How about their uppers? What's the word on Model 1 Sales and so on??? I could really use some advice and if I could save some $$ by ordering from a vendor that offers a Military personnel or AR15.com discount, that would be a plus. Thanks

+1 ADCO, CMMG, and also look at Rainer Arms for parts(mil discount too).

IMHO, go to a gunshow for the lower, so you can inspect it in person.

I would recommend taking the time, and research the parts, and make sure you are getting good quality parts.  Better to spend more money now, then to have to replace broken parts later.

Why a non-chromed barrel, most people here would highly recommend a chrome lined barrel.  You can get the M4A1 Socom barrel from CMMG.  If you are willing to put together your own upper, I would recommend using a upper other then CMMG, the channel for the charging handle has been rough and a little small on the 2 uppers of mine, and took all the finish all my charging handle.  However I love CMMG barrels and service.

For triggers, Geissele.  I have one, and wish I could afford to put them in all my ARs.

Also check out the Equipment Exchange here.  You can get some good deals on the EE.
