Hello all,

I was wondering if you could cut a rifle recoil spring to the size of a carbine spring and would there any problems doing so.

As long as you were using it in a carbine tube, i see no problem. And, i would put the cut end towards the buffer.

PropDoc,

Thanks for your response, and yes it's a carbine buffer tube.

Well I did it, I matched the rifle spring against a carbine spring, marked the right spot and cut a section off. I compared them up after the cut and they match pretty good. I will test it out tomorrow.

Any time you take a coil spring and cut coils off of it you WILL increase the spring rate (i.e. pounds per inch of compression). We used to do this to the front springs in our stock car to get a higher spring rate. (we were required to use factory springs The question is, will it increase the rate enough to affect cycling? I can't say, but I'm interested to find out, as it should be enough to make a difference in felt recoil as compared to the carbine spring.

phlegyas,

In reference to your response, I will be using a 9MM buffer, I will do a comparison between the two buffer springs and post an update.
