How well do these work? Will they do the same thing as an action block? Looking to assemble my own upper with free float, etc. I was looking at picking up this one: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=292126

The gentleman/proprietor of ar15barrels.com refers to the DPMS Claw as the Cadillac of upper receiver fixtures.  I have one now, but haven't used it yet.  Try a search.  there was a thread about it a month or so ago.

Cordially,

That's the one I use also, I've done close to 100 barrel/tube swaps with it and it hasn't let me down.

There are two major upper receiver fixtures. One is by DPMS (Panther Claw), the other one is by PRI (Precision Reflex Inc.).

IMHO, PRI one is Mercedes Benz, the Panther Claw is Toyota.

Ok, I'm gonna grab the dpms fixture and multitool. What size punches do I need? I have an assortment but I want to make sure I have everything I'll need. Thanks for the help thus far.

There is also a new fixture on the market and has been advertised in the new AR products forum. It is made by CrossTac. It looks nice and the price is not bad but I also use the DPMS claw for quite a few barrel swaps and it is great. I like it better than the Brownells clamshell device which I have also used.

ETA: I just looked at the PRI model and although it looks nice it seems to do exactly what the DPMS model does but a little more expensive.

The DPMS claw is really really solid and is available for only $35 from jsesurplus.com

There are good pin punch sets available for $18 shipped on ebay, but they are of low quality and it is hard to set roll pins with them. For front sight base pins (which can be extremely difficult to get out) you need a high quality steel punch.

If you're handy with a table saw and need something quick, I put this together with some scrap Trex decking

ADCO has the best selection and prices on AR gunsmithing tools. Their upper fixture is only $29. The clam shell design sucks… stay away from it. The “panther claw” design is the best. A few companies make it and they are all the same as far as I can tell. They are just a UHMW plastic block that is properly machined and fitted with pins.

I thought Adco's block wasn't designed for rebarreling, that the DPMS block has much more plastic sticking into the upper to push against. Is this not correct? This is why ADCOs site says something like "this block can be used for rebarreling an A3 upper sideways with wooden blocks" or something like that. I would have jumped on it at $29 if could take my A2 upper to 75 ft lbs like the DPMS block can.
