I just built a workbench from scratch and I now want to get some basic tools for my ARs. I'm not looking to get presses and heavy machinery. I just want to get some punches, receiver blocks, and what not to be able to do general AR maintenance and builds. What are some of the things you guys, who have a well established work bench, have to keep your AR builds going? Thanks for any tips, tricks, and advice in advance.

ETA:
I want to be able to replace a flash hider, barrel, etc. at a moments notice. I hate having to drive a good way to have someone do it for me!

I bought a couple USGI barrel wrenches. They work on the barrel nut, and also do A1, A2, and 3 prong FHs. A 1/2" torque wrench, a good bench vise, a receiver block to hold the upper receiver in the vise, and moly grease. A little on the upper threads makes things go smoother.

Forget the USGI max poundage for barrel nut installation. Tighten it til it lines up. When I get it close I put the gas tube in, then put the wrench on the bottom of the nut to line it all up.

Invest in some roll pin punches for lower receiver assembly.

Have fun!

I did get a nice bench vise. It has a built in anvil! joelad, do you have a link to where you bought a couple USGI barrel wrenches? Would you recommend a multi tool?

I have the basics. Most of this can be picked up from the venders here on the site. Try Bushmaster for vice blocks and GI barrel wrenches, Del-Ton for the DPMS style combo wrenches.

I bought one of my wrenches from Northridge, the other I found at a gun show.
