god day all,
i have a question regarding markings on stripped lowers. i tried asking the LGS employees and calling local PD to get a straight answer today, but that didnt get me anywhere.

when i built my 9mm carbine i bought an RRA 9mm marked lower that had already been assembled.

if i purchase a stripped lower (LGS has stag lowers at a good price) that is marked on the lower as 5.56 nato and also marked as rifle, then build this lower as a 9mm pistol does this violate any laws?

i remember reading that as long as its purchased as a stripped lower, and not a rifle that has been converted to a pistol, that i would be in full compliance with the law. But i dont wanna find out the sh**ty way.

any links to relevant government pages would be great. thanks. darkstar

I believe it is the other way around , if it is a pistol lower you can make it a rifle but not from rifle to pistol. It has to be marked as a pistol lower in order to be a pistol, but better check with some of the arfcom lawhounds.

If the lower has NEVER been in rifle form you should be good to go. There is an ATF letter floating around here some where that states this if you need it in writing

thats the case mauser man, the lowers were bought yesterday. when i spoke the LGS owner (i called and asked him to come in and enlighten me on this. hes a great guy, he let me watch as he built my first lower, then watched and corrected as i built the 2nd) he said the same.

he also told me that, as mentioned in this thread by another member, that a pistol marked reciever or AR pistol can be converted to rifle, but not the other way.

The way he explained stripped lowers is that if the lower is purchased stripped (not assembled as pistol or rifle lower), and is logged out in the books as a striped lower and not a "rifle  or pistol receiver", that you are working from a blank canvas regardless of the markings on the receiver.  you still have to abide by all laws regarding the definition of pisytol, rifle, sbr etc.

sounded logical enough to me...but if anyone knows any different please let me know!

i would realy love a link to that letter though....just to print out and keep w/ the pistol at all times.

The Pistol Forum has a lot of good info.  Read the tacked threads at the top and the one with the BATFE letter.
