I'm looking to cange the FH to a Compensator but how do you guys hold the barrel?

I pulled the handgaurds and put the barrel in a vise with wood jaws but the barrel would still spin and I didn't want to risk hitting the gas tube.
I was hesitant to put the BCG part of the upper (receiver?) in the vise for a number of reasons so I didn't.

Thanks, Mike

Get a upper receiver vice block.  This will help a lot of times when working on uppers.

Cut up an old leather belt.
Wrap the leather around the front sight base which is pinned to the barrel.
Clamp the FSB and leather in a vise.

You are correct to avoid torquing the muzzle device while holding the receiver in a vise.
This can enlarge the indexing slot and twist the barrel if you have a tight muzzle device.

Randall,

I wasn't sure if the FSB was pinned to the barrel or not and I certainly didn't want to spin it to find out. Thank you.

Hope it ain't pinned on...........

ps - I have never needed a vise to remove a threaded FS that wasn't pinned.
