Is there any benefit from having the oversized HGs instead of the regular skinny ones?

Looking forward to the answer, I was wondering the same thing. I figured the fat ones would be hard to hold. I was hoping to get some to try, but if someone says there is no benefit, then I probably won't. Might look funny with my lightweight barrel profile.

I prefer the M$ ones to the skinny ones. and I know that they have 2 heat shields. like dubled up, to keep things cool. That's all that I know...

As someone stated above the M4 guards have dual aluminum heat shields under the plastic where the CAR guards only have one layer.  I find the delta ring and the gas block are what I burn myself on after sustanined fire anyway, so I have not found the practical difference between them.
I have small hands and when I first switched from a CAR15 to an M4 I did not like the greater diameter of the M4 guards.  With the front rail systems available now I do not use the standard handguards anyway.  If I was to go back to them I would want to try the thinner CAR ones though.

Just thinking practically, being that the M4 can fire at full-auto, I can see adding extra heat shields. The overall size had to be increased to add the extra shied, plus put the shooters hand farther away from the barrel.
I don’t know if that’s why, but it seems to make since to me...
I use a railed HG system, but I do have "Gorilla Hands" so the M4 style HGs do work better for me when shooting a non-railed set up.
