| before I read the propper torque specs of 40 inch pounds I tightened some carrier key screws down fairly tight with a allen wrench and staked them the correct way. I wonder if it will actually hurt anything to leave them this way. If had to guess I would say I put about 12 or 15 foot lbs on them. |

Well 15 ft/lbs equates to 180 in/lbs, about 4X the recommended torque. I don’t know the strength of the screws you used but I might be concerned about the bolt heads sheering under stress. I’ve been using torque wrenches in aviation maintenance for the past 22+ years. I was always taught that torque wrenches are used to prevent fasteners from being over torqued rather than under torqued.
