As I put the final touches on my AR-15 build and did an function test.  I hit the butt of the stock onto the floor lightly and the bolt slam home. I should now this answer, but I can not think of it, since I hardly touch my AR in awhile.   when the mag is in the well, it will not close.  I tested my other AR-15 and the same thing.

Thanks
Bob

P.S. I don't use semi that much.

I'm not 100% sure I understand your post, but:

1. You slammed the buttstock into the floor, and the bolt closed? Was there a mag in it? Are you sure you only did it "lightly"? It seems to me like you'd have to smack it pretty darn good.

2. If there's an empty magazine inserted, the bolt won't close unless you hit the bolt release.

3. You don't use semi that much? What does that mean? You use bolt guns more, or...?

The mag well was empty when I tap it on the floor. bolt slammed home.  But when I have the magazine in the well, the bolt stay open.  As for the type of rifle that I use,  99% of the time I am using an bolt action and the other 1% single shot rifle(NEF).

When you hit the buttstock on the ground without a mag in place, inertia causes the bolt carrier to move back slightly and come off the bolt stop. The bolt stop retracts and let's the bolt close.

Same deal with the mag inserted, except the mag follower pushs up on the bolt stop holding it in place. In turn, the BCG stays in place.

Thanks that is what I thought.  I pushed back the bolt about 1/8" and it slam closed without the magazine in the well.
