I'm planning a SPR, strictly bench rested and scoped for target - I've decided on a Vltor MUR,(or LaRue) 24 in Krieger barrel 1:9, cut by Compass lake and JPs VTAC FF handguards mated to a RRA lower.
Since Im seeking precision first, and second, good looks, am I placing 'form before function'? In other words, as an average shooter, (hardly shoots MOA) would I get the same accuracy in a less expensive off-the-shelf completed upper like RRA or Bush? alternative builds suggestions greatly appreciated.. TIA docgary |

The parts will fit together nicely. The JP FF tube comes with the barrel nut you need. I have a similar config and would recommend the Larue Low Profile Gas Block unless you want rails or the regular sight. I have the MUR and love it. I would recommend the DPMS Panther Claw. I used a regular action block and it worked ok but it probably isn't optimal since a couple of places will rub. I also have the RRA Two stage trigger and am very fond of it. And a Harris Bipod should be a must have unless you use sandbags or something. The JP has a little stud that means you don't need an adaptor. |
Yes.
No. The FF tube will act as barrel nut.
If your upper reciever has M4 cuts and your barrel doesn't, you will have feed problems. Any other combination is OK, though matched (with or without) is probably best.
I wouldn't say "must" but you'll need some sort of action block if you want to assemble your own upper--and the Panther Claw is awfully nice.
Not from me. Never used either.
Probably.
Probably.
Assembling your own upper is fun, but generally more expensive than buying one that's already assembled. The tools alone add enough to the expense of the project that the economics of the whole process are justified only by the personal satisfaction factor. My SPR-ish upper consists of Mega Upper, WOA 18" barrel w/matching bolt & WOA BCG. I started with a DCM FF tube but have purchased a YHM Lightweight FF tube and am going to get rid of the DCM setup. I used a Fulton Armory PowerWedge FSB, though a folding front sight would be more SPR-ish, I think. Unless you have a billet lower, I wouldn't spend the extra $$$ for a billet upper.
My pleasure. |

A quick search revealed that LaRue's billet upper receiver is NOT ramped.... thereby solving my mismatch problem. Questions: If I was dead set on the Vltor upper receiver WITH M4 ramps, I imagine I could have Compass Lake cut the extension with ramps. Would having a matched M4 ramped barrel and receiver affect precision in a 24 inch barrelled rifle strictly for long range and target shooting? If I had the choice of a matched ramped and unramped reciever/barrel, are there any advantages going with one over the other? ( I plan on using Black hills 68 gr Match HP and 69 gr Matchking HP) Thanks again Docgary |

It's not Thursday--feed ramp questions are supposed to be reserved for Thursday--but it's kind of slow at work this afternoon so I'll humor you... You might search for 'feed', 'ramps', 'feed ramps' and several other iterations of M4 feed ramps. You could read all day long. With those longer bullets, the M4 ramps might be slightly less abusive of the bullet tips than standard feed ramps. I'm under the impression that M4 feed ramps were developed to solve a 'theoretical' problem in full auto weapons. If you plan to use a 'bobsled' or other single feed approach, it won't matte at all. |
