Probably a really dumb question, but I'm building an AR from a Del-ton kit. What are the differances between the A1 with brass deflector and forward assist and the A2 upper?

I thought all ARs had forward assists.

Get the A2 unless you are looking for the "retro" look. A matter of tast I presume.

Unless it is a slick side, the A2 has the forward assist and deflector too.

I am switching from an A2 upper to an A1 upper on my Superlite. I think simpler is gooder.

If your looking for simplicity, then go with the A1 style upper. On a carbine, with A2 sights, you’ll most likely never use them. My Home Defense Carbine is a no frills basic light weight rifle with A1/C7 upper receiver. As far as function goes, there’s no difference between the A1 and A2 upper receivers outside of the rear sight.

+1 for QUIB; as a home defense weapon, the A2 sights are worthless; go with the A1/C7; gives you the simplicity of the A1 sights (set them up and be done) and the brass hump of the A2, so you can shoot it as a lefty without worrying about a facefull of brass.
