I just put together my first A1 upper with triangular handguards.  The triangular handguard front piece is loose and can slide forward 1/4" and allows looseness in the handguards at the front.  The rear of the guards are in position around the barrel nut and are secure.

What did I do wrong?  is there some kind of spacer that is supposed to go between the front sight and the triangular handguard retainer?

It is a Colt M16 barrel and barrel nut and mil-surplus handguards so I thought everything would fit.........

Any/all help is appreciated!

It sounds to me like you have the Delta ring and spring on the wrong side of the snap ring. They should be on the barrel side of the snap ring, with close to 1/4" between the upper receiver and the Delta ring. Is that how you have it?

Yes, that is a problem. Its normal for the front retainer to rotate in place, but sliding up and down the barrel is not. There is a slight step in the barrel that keeps it in place. Unfortunately you'll have to remove the front sight base to install a new one.

I have the 1/4" between the receiver and the Delta ring and the spring and ring are on the barrel side as you mentioned so that is not the problem.  The hand guards lock into the barrel nut flange via a groove on the inside at the rear of the handguard so I know they are positioned properly to the rear.

The barrel has a step for the trianuglar handguard cap in the front but the cap slides back and forth (fore and aft) on that barrel "step".  The handguards do not move fore and aft because they are trapped by the groove which engages the barrel nut.

Is it possible that the front sight is too far forward?  The sight was pre-assembled on the barrel when I got it (from Sarco).  If it is too far forward does that mean my gas hole is not aligned with the barrel?  Is there an easy way to check the alignement?

Thanks,

Jeff

How far does the front handguard cap move fore and aft without out the handguards installed?

It slides fore and aft about 1/4" without the handguards installed.  Is that not OK?

Thanks,

Jeff

.250 is way to much for the front handguard cap to be moving.

Can you take a picture. It sounds like the front sight base is not where it needs to be.

OK, here is the back end by the delta ring and the front end at the front sight.  The front sight came pre-assembled on the barrel from Sarco but that doesn't mean anything.  I have never had really good luck with them and it wouldn't surprise me if it was installed in the wrong place......

If Sarco actually did the front sight base install, I would be giving them a call and sending that back. It's obviously not where it needs to be. Sorry about that one.

Dang!  And I thought this was going to be easy!  Is there any way to see if the gas hole lines up from the barrel to the sight?

Thanks gain,

Jeff

Oh yeah.........that ain't right. The front sight base should be ALL the way back to the step. But even then, looking at the pic, that retainer looks funny. The retainer should NOT move back beyond the step. It should get "pinched" between the front sight tower and the step. See if Sarco will fix it. cause it is not right.
