This is probably common knowledge for several people here, but is there a correct and incorrect way to orient the crush washer when installing a phantom?

The Phantom A2 has an area on the bottom that is solid like an A2 flash hider which should be, well ... uh, oriented to the bottom.  The other models do not require timing or particular orientation.

Copy that - what I am asking is does it matter which way the crush washer is installed.

i've seen them installed both ways, my colt m4 was one way and my lmt was the other. all my j&t uppers are like my colt smaller side facing the barrel. i hope this helps. maybe someone on here knows the answer

Sorry.  Misunderstood.  The crush washers usually go convex side (outy) toward the barrel, and concave (iny) side toward the supressor.

Thanks for the info - I knew someone here would know the answer. Just out of curiosity, has anybody who has one noticed any change in accuracy by using a phantom?

The phantom FH shouldn't affect your rifle's accuracy. If a negative change is noticed it could be due to the FH installation itself - over torqueing it to the barrel or accidental damage to the muzzle crown.

The correct way is like this:

Phantom > Barrel

Randall, have you ever worked on an Armalite M-4 style barrel? I have tried everything I can think of to get the factory A2 flash hider off of mine, but it will not budge. This is the first rifle I have owned that does not have any kind of washer between the barrel and the rear of the flash hider. I contacted Armalite and they said that if it had been permanently attached it would have a somewhat noticeable circle on the bottom of the flash hider where the pin hole had been welded. Is it possible that they may have pressed this thing on?

I would have to take a look at it, but once in a while, you get a really tight one.
If they absolutely won't move, I spin it in the lathe and machine off the muzzle device.
That will take it off no matter how it was permanent attached.

Armalite does one hell of a good job hiding the pin.  I had to grind a bunch away to even get a glimpse of the outline.  They use welding rod, but it is tight in the drilled hole.

I have never seen an Armalite factory barrel with an A2 flash hider that was permanent attached.
This would have to be a 16" barrel as an A2 flash hider will not "make length" when installed on a 14.5" barrel.

Either he has a 16" barrel with a stuck A2, or he has something else entirely, but Armalite did not do it...
