Best check your state laws on big game caliber use. Not that a .223 won't kill it, i am pretty sure there are some states that require 30 cal or larger. A mid length rifle ( 18'') would work really well for 300 to 500 yards, farther than that i would go 20". Have fun with your build.

if you are going to be using it for deer hunting you would be better off with 6.5 grendel,6.8spc, or an ar 10 in .308.
.223 is a little on the light side for deer in my opinionhinking.gif

brother i live in the great state of kentucky, where any centerfire caliber is legal. i have two brother law enforcement officers who hunt white tails with their 16" ar,s every season, and always bring home meat. no problem to drop them out to 200 yards! G>gordon liddy said it best; "superior firepower is being able to hit what you aim at! shot placement is the ticket. holler back at me................

I am patiently waiting on my 458 upper from RRA. MAN I can't wait for Winter.

Varmint type generally implies 24" barrel, a scope with very high magnification, probably a bipod and generally no consideration for keeping overall weight in check.

For deer, I'd load 70gr soft points.  Personally, I wouldn't want a 24" barrel, either.  I'd go 20" max and wouldn't hesitate to shoot 200yds or more with a 16" barrel.

I plan to hunt deer this fall with the 18" AR I'm building right now.

.223 will kill em dead, bullet selection is key. Look at the 60+ grain hunting bullets.

I'm happy with my Grendel.  I could also use a Beowulf or 458 as those guns have kind of a nice, built-in range limitation for tight country shooting.

i didnt say it wouldnt kill them but when i shoot something i want it to go down as you said shot placement is the key. i hunt wide open prairie and alot of times you have to take shots from alot further than 200 yards
