I brought some of my guns to my parents house as I ran out of room at mine.  My dad shoots the Bushmaster I have now religiously.  He's been talking about the bushmaster varminter for a while now and I figured I would be able to build it cheaper than buying it.  Am I correct in my thinking?  If so, what would I need for tools as well as what am I looking at for cost?  Thanks.

Hey weasel,

I basically got by using just a hammer, rubber mallet and a couple of brass punches to help assemble my stripped lowers.

You should be alright with a roll pin punch set (different from standard punches), hammer (small hobby one will do just fine), armorers tool for tightening barrel nut. (unless you are free floating then you will need a free float wrench).

Roll pin punch set at grainger.com for $14
small hobby hammer at dollar store for $1-2
armorers wrench $20 and up

You will need a 1/2" ratchet or breaker to turn armorers tool
And some anti-seize for the barrel nut which is $2-3 at auto parts store

All the above tools will make your build go smooth.

(I have wife stand on gun assembly on a carpeted floor while I tighten the barrel nut.  35ft.lbs or so then line up gas tube hole in nut/upper receiver as needed.  Works just fine.  (like a true redneck) :)

*note* roll pin punches have tits on the end of the punches that go into the inner diameter of the roll pins.  This keeps the roll pin from mushrooming while you are driving it into its respective holes in the receiver.

I'll do a free float tube on one of them.  Eventually I'd like to build a few but have some other things on the front burners.  Mostly was just looking at what I'd need to build a varminter.  Just seeing if I could save some money or even break even building my own.  If I could break even with buying the tools and build it on my own, I'd be happy.  That way I spend the same cash but end up with some extra tools.

I'll be heading through your area around March 10th and on my way back a week later.  The girlfriend and I are heading to NC for spring break.  Gonna stop by and Big Steve.  If we can hook up I'd like to at least stop by and meet you if not do a build.

I would also pay the $5 for the front pivot detent tool.  I am working on my first lower and the spring just sprang the detent into outer space.

Why $5 when a clearance feeler gauge does the trick?  Or anything else that will fit the job and is already laying around your house/garage.

I own 3 AR15 dedicated tools...armorers wrench, collapsible stock wrench and a freefloat wrench.  The roll pin punches, etc. I use on alot of stuff.

I got away with:

Lower build:

1x appropriate size punch
hammer
tape
flathead screwdriver
AR15 printed build instructions

Upper Build:

Vice
Upper reciever block
Armorers Wrench
Appropriate grease
Snap-Ring pliers (external I believe?)

Nice to haves:
white bed sheet in the tub (for spring installs)
handguard removal tool

I'm sure I missed some more tools that would make it easier but not must have's.
