Well I was looking at the "new " AWB draft that the Dems sent to comitee on 2/13/2007 ( yep less than two months in power, raise taxes, new AWB, and cut and run)
anyhow that bill HR.1022 is way more restrictive than the old one. Before they had five things any three defined an assault rifle, now any one item is an assault rifle. They seem to be going after pistol grip stocks this time though, and they even include thumbhole stocks on a Semi Auto rifle with a detachable mag.
My question is this if this should get into law, (I no longer rule out anything) could one remove the gas tube and plug the gas block, and turn an AR into a bolt action repieting rifle? I know i saw somthing like that but I can not find it and do not remember what the name was but it looked like an AR except  it had a small bolt handle and was operated like a bolt action. would that work? and is it a viable option other than storing the semi's for a decade till this new abommination sunsets  If we get stuck with the new one (GOD FORBID)

I don't know why not. They seem to focus on semi auto, and it would be a single shot.

At least thats my theory and the reason I built one before the last ban expired [in case it was renewed in a worse form]. In addition I can varmit hunt with it in PA where we aren't allowed to use semi's. Kind of confuses game wardens though.

Mine has a collar with a set screw that covers the gas port ,no tube or gas key and a bolt handle drilled thru side of the the bolt carrier. Straight pull back, release and the buffer spring loads the next round.

It's not even worth the bandwidth to speculate at this point.  It's in committee and by the time it gets to a floor vote in both houses, if it ever does (very unlikely), it will have gone through many drafts with much compromising.  The actual law will read much differently.

Be vigilant, as always, but this bill does not have legs.  We're entering into election season and the Dems remember what happen to them after the AWB passed in 1994. They were voted out of congress. They are going to do a lot of things in the next 2 years, but this is not one of them.

Remember too, "Democrat" does not mean anti-gun, especially in this congress.  Separate them into pro-gun and anti-gun and you'll see we have a majority.  Party lines make it a little cloudy, but we have a far more pro-gun congress than we did in 1994.
