I just put together my first upper. I had a hard time getting the pin in the DPMS gasblock. I really scratched it and it is driving me crazy. What is the proper method to install roll pins?

Using a roll pin punch, they are available from Brownells.  Use the right tools, no scratches!

On gas blocks, I usually run a 0.081" drill bit into the side I am starting from.
This lets the pin get started easier before I drive it through the gas tube and into the other side.

I also have a sequence of punches I use so I don't slip off the pin.
I custom made these starter punches from scraps of brass.

The "proper" method is to use roll pin holders. I bought a couple of the smaller ones and they work really well. They seem a little pricey but how much would you pay to not have scratched your gasblock?

On the other hand, black rifles aren't supposed to be pretty. If you use the thing you're going to get marks on it.
